Lizards Defeat Cannons

Boston Cannons Fall 13-11 to Lizards

Cannons comeback falls short on road

BOSTON, MA - Thursday, May 27, 2010 – The Boston Cannons (2-1) fell the Long Island Lizards (1-2) 13-11 Thursday night at LaValle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University.  Matt Poskay scored 4 goals as Cannons comeback falls short.  Lizards’ Goalie Andrew Adams won Bud Light MVP player of the game honors with 14 saves.

The Cannons struggled out of the start with very little offensive possession.  Long Island scored on their first possession of the game.  Matt Poskay scored his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.  The Lizards scored the next two goals including Greg Gurenlian’s spectacular goal after winning the face off and taking the ball to the goal and scoring while falling to the ground.  Justin Smith and Poskay scored the final 2 goals of the quarter to tie the score at 3-3.

The Cannons sloppy play continued into the second quarter with multiple turnovers and few scoring chances.  The Lizards once again opened up the scoring, this time a 2 point goal by Chris Fiore.  Mike Stone scored for the third consecutive game and cut the score to 6-4, but after back to back turnovers and Jack Reid’s second penalty on the night, the Lizards capitalized late in the half.  Long Island continued to control the play and frustrate the Cannons.  Stephen Peyser finished the first half scoring for the home team and the Lizards took an 8-4 lead into the half.

The third quarter saw the Cannons continued to get outplayed and frustrated by the Lizards.  Long Island scored 45 seconds into the quarter to set the tone again.  The Lizards scored the next two goals to lead 11-4 with 10minutes to go in the quarter.  The remainder of the quarter saw physical play from both teams leading to multiple penalties including a 5 minute penalty against Jack Reid as he reacted to a hot on cannons goalie Kip Turner.  Throughout the physical play neither team could find the back of the net and the quarter ended with the Lizards leading 11-4.

The Cannons finally showed some life to start the fourth quarter as Matt Poskay scored his third goal of the game and Brad Ross followed with a two point goal 30 seconds later to cut the Lizards lead to 11-7.  Sloppy play from the Cannons returned and the Lizards capitalized scoring the next 2 goals to take a 31-7 lead with 5:38 remaining.  The Cannons put on one last run with three straight goals, including a 2 point goal from Kevin Buchanan, but the charge fell short as the Cannons went down in defeat 13-11.

The Lizards defense held the Cannons potent offense in check most of the night, and their double team efforts on Paul Rabil kept the 2009 MVP off the score sheet.

The Cannons will return to action when they travel to take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, June 4 at 7:30 PM.

Group and individual tickets are on sale for all remaining Cannons home games and the 2010 MLL All-Star Game being held at Harvard Stadium on July 8th.  For more information, or to purchase Cannons tickets, visit BOSTONCANNONS.COM or call (617) 746-9933.
