Game Notes: Chesapeake- Denver

The Chesapeake Bayhawks (2-5) are looking to keep their new-found winning streak alive and improve it to two while the Denver Outlaws (6-1) are looking to keep a solid lead on the league with their hold on first place.

Last time out:

Chesapeake: Chesapeake had a huge morale-boosting, one-goal win last week against Boston that puts them at 2-5 in the season. Ben Hunt led the Bayhawks with an impressive six goals and two assists for a total of eight points in the game (one point less than his career high 9). Brendan Mundorf had five goals while Joe Walters led the team with four assists. Even though the Bayhawks came away with the W, Boston out-faceoffed them 25 to 9, out-shot them , and had more ground balls. Boston dominated the second quarter, outscoring Chesapeake 7-2 but the Bayhawks were able to rally in the second half scoring nine to the Cannons four. Kip Turner had 15 saves for the Bayhawks giving him a .500 save rate for the game.

Denver: Denver dominated their game against New York last week… up until the fourth quarter that is. At the start of the fourth, Denver led 14-5 and had kept New York to only three shots in the third quarter. However, after a seven goal scoring streak that started about four minutes intp the third and ended two minutes into the fourth, the Lizards took control and went on a scoring streak of their own netting six unanswered goals. Ultimately though, Denver came away victorious. Curtis Dickson had four goals and three assists for a total of seven points while Eric Law had three goals and assists for six total points. Jeremy Sieverts netted a two-pointer for the Outlaws while Matt Bocklet picked up five ground balls. New York won the faceoff battle 16-13. Jesse Schwartzman had 15 saves before being subbed out for Charlie Cipriano who let in five of the six goals scored by the Lizards in the last quarter.

Three storylines:

Maryland Reunion:Eight former University of Maryland players will be taking the field this weekend. Chesapeake’s Joe Walters, Dan Burns, Jeff Reynolds, Jesse Bernhardt, and Grant Catalino from the Bayhawks are all alum while Denver’s Jeremy Sieverts, Drew Snider, and Lee Zink all played for the Terps for their college careers.

Record Game: Brendan Mundorf is just four goals away from his 250th career goal. John Grant Jr is seven assists away from his 150th career assist as well as seven points away from his 430th career point. Anthony Kelly is 14 faceoff wins away from his 1350th career faceoff win.

All-Stars: This week’s game between Denver and Chesapeake will feature 16 players that will take the field for the MLL All-Star Game next Thursday. Chesapeake’s  Brendan Mundorf, Matt Abbott, Dan Burns, Matt Mackrides, Jeff Reynolds, Michael Evans, and Jesse Bernhardt will dress in our nation’s colors and represent Team USA while Drew Snider, Lee Zink, and Jesse Schwartzman will represent Denver on the Team USA roster. Jeremy Sieverts, Michael Simon, Anthony Kelly, and Eric Law will be the Team MLL players from the Denver roster while Jordan Burke, Brodie Merrill, and Kyle Sweeney will be the Boston representatives for Team MLL.

Players to Watch:

Chesapeake: Brendan Mundorf is a threat to begin with. Put him on the offensive end against a team he played with since he joined the league back in 2006 and he’s going to know the in’s and out’s of their defense like he knows how to work from x (which is very well).

Denver: John Grant Jr could prove to be lethal for the Outlaws in the same way Mundorf will be lethal for the Bayhawks. Grant played for the Bayhawks last season and therefore knows how their defense operates. And since the only rookie Chesapeake has activated so far this season plays at the opposite end of the field, Grant is going to be able to work the defense to his avantage and set his teammates up for success.

Statistical Leaders:

Chesapeake: Brendan Mundorf leads the team in points (23), goals (17), and is tied with Joe Walters on assists (6). Jesse Bernhardt  and Matt Abbott lead in groundballs with 23. The Bayhawks just acquired faceoff specialist, Stephen Robarge who went 7 for 17 in last week’s game against Rochester. Keeper, Kip Turner has a 11.62 goals against average with a .553 save rate on 170 shots.

Denver: Eric Law leads the team in points (31) and goals (20). John Grant Jr leads the team in assists (12) but is closely followed by Law (11). Jeremy Sieverts leads the team and the league in 2 point goals (5). Matt Bocklet has 33 ground balls while Anthony Kelly trails with 32. Kelly is also 96 for 177 on faceoffs giving him a .542 face off win percentage. Jesse Schwartzman leads the league in save rate (.623) and goals against average (8.92)

 2013 Season Series:

Denver won both games in the 2013 season against Chesapeake

Fun Facts:

Chesapeake: Chesapeake has the same starting record they did in 2009 at 2-5 with their wins coming in the same weeks (Week 2 and Week 6)

Denver: Denver has the top 5 best attended games in league history.
