Another Gift from Monster’s Kids Helps Children in Need
Tim Goettelmann has made a name for himself as the all-time leading goal scorer in Major League Lacrosse history – but what he would really like to be known for is his compassionate commitment to children’s healthcare on Long Island.
On October 7, 2010, Goettelmann presented a check on behalf of his charitable organization, Monster’s Kids, to benefit the Pediatric Emergency Department at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. The generous donation was comprised of Goettelmann’s entire salary from playing attack for the Long Island Lizards, the money he received from winning the 2010 New Balance Sportsman of the Year Award, and philanthropic gifts made by other Major League Lacrosse players.
“Nothing is more frightening than spending time in the emergency room with your child,” said Goettelmann, who grew up in Manhasset and currently resides in Garden City. “I’m hoping that this latest donation will provide the hospital with more life-saving equipment so that parents will know their children are receiving the best possible care.”
Monster’s Kids was established in 2009 by Goettelmann and his wife, Lisa, along with their longtime friends Kristen and Dan Denihan of Manhasset. “I came up with the idea while reading the book Where the Wild Thing Are to my kids at bedtime,” said Goettelmann. “That night I realized how blessed I was to have two happy, healthy children, and I started to think about how I could help those who were not as fortunate.”
After touring Cohen Children’s Medical Center, the Goettelmanns were impressed enough to designate the hospital as the permanent beneficiary of Monster’s Kids, and they received significant support from the Long Island Lizards organization to get their new charity up and running. According to Goettelmann, “What excites me most about Monster’s Kids is that I was able to take two things that I am very passionate about, children and lacrosse, and combine them into a successful charity.”
In just one year, Monster’s Kids has already raised nearly $100,000 for the hospital through several fundraising efforts, including a reception earlier this year at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success attended by 150 parents of young children. Now the Goettelmanns and Denihans are gearing up for their next event: a “Woodstick Classic” alumni lacrosse tournament at Manhasset High School on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The day will raise funds and awareness for Monster’s Kids and Ryan’s Heroes, an organization formed in memory of Garden City High School alumnus and September 11 victim Ryan Kohart. Any lacrosse alumni of either Garden City High School or Manhasset High School who wish to participate should contact Tim Goettelmann at tgoetts@yahoo.com, Dan Denihan at ddenihan@newmarkkf.com or Adam Kohart at kohart25@yahoo.com.
About CCMC
For three consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked the Steven and Alexandra Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC) – part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System – as one of the best in the country. Opened in 1983 and known as Schneider Children’s Hospital until March 2010, the New Hyde Park facility is one of only two pediatric trauma centers in the New York area. Construction is now underway on a 100,000-square-foot pavilion to be built in front of the existing hospital. When completed in 2013, the pavilion will include the region’s first dedicated, stand-alone pediatric emergency department; a 24-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; a 25-bed Medical-Surgical Unit; and a state-of-the-art surgery center with six operating rooms solely for children.
